The Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar (Burma) located in the southernmost part of the country has over 800 islands scattering around 3600 km along the shore and it is a goldmine for macro underwater

photographers who can enjoy capturing on film tiny critters such as gobies, shrimps, nudibranches etc onboard of our liveaboard vessel MV Nautica. It possesses the most virgin islands offering the most beautiful and amazing dive sites. Extensive coral reefs around the islands are home to an abundance of marine fauna and flora. The symbiosis of an almost endless variety of hard and soft corals, with an even bigger variety of fish and many kind of other marine life, is still in its natural balance and remains mostly undisturbed.

This healthy environment attracts predators such as Barracudas, Sharks as Black and White Tips who regularly come in to feast on the smaller species. The frequent sightings of Wale Sharks, Manta Rays and Dolphins makes our Mergui expeditions even more exciting. Those who want to spend their holiday by doing diving, snorkeling, kayaking, jungle trekking in the tropical rain forest, sport fishing, birds and wild life watching and study to living style of Sea Gipsy (Morken) People.

Kawthoung

kawthaungKawthoung is the gate way of Mergui archipelage and located at the southern edge of Myanmar. The town was build by British and named Victoria Poing. There is a river name Perchan separate kawthoung and Rangng of Thailand. Most of tourists come from Ranong to Kawthoung by crossing to the river with small long tail boat to enter to Myanmar's virgin archipelago and some are come directly from Thailand's most famous topical paradise city Phuket with liveabord boats and sailing boats. The colorful people are living on that small town, among of them Burmese, Thai, Malay, Indian and Chinese are prominent.

There are regular 1 hour 15 minutes flights from Yangon (Rangoon) to Kawthaung (Victoria Point). Visitors from Thailand could take a 30 minutes boat trips from Ranong (Thai border town) to Kawthaung. One of the budget airlines in Thailand makes regular flight from Bangkok to Ranong. And it takes 4 hours by car from Phuket or Samui to Ranong. Entry visas, valid for 28 days, are issued at Kawthaung.

Nowadays, foreign people can use their passport to enter Kawthaung through Ranong. It is one of the gateways people from Phuket use for their visa extension. Local Thai people can use their local border pass book to visit Kawthoung. People with passports can go to Myeik and Dawei.

Dawei

dawe1iDawei, which the British called Tavoy, is about 30 miles (48km) from the mouth of the Dawei River on the coast of Taninthayi (Tenessarim) Division. It is one of the oldest ports in Myanmar and was mentioned by the merchant traveler Ralph Fitch, who in 1583 became the first English-man to set foot on Myanmar soil. Dawei is a prosperous town, with many of the richest families owning fleets of fishing vessels or rubber plantations. As is usual with the typical and conservative, Myanmar us e of wealth, it is not apparent to the casual eye . It is a quiet, peaceful little town.

Shin Motehti Pagoda

One of the most revered by Dawei pilgrims, this pagoda is reputed to be more than 600 years old.

Paya Gyi Thein Wa Kyaung

This famous monastery many Buddha images as well as a figure of the Guardian of the Earth that devotees worship for their good health.

Dawei shwe Tharlyaung

At 242 ft(73.7m), the Dawei Shwe Tharlyaung was one of the longest reclining Buddha images in pleted Win Sein image Between Mawlamyine and Thanbyuzayat in Mon State reached an insurmountable 656 ft (200m).

Myeik

myeikMyeik (Mergui) is between the sea and low hills with pagodas, monasteries and government buildings. It is a busy port town and a centre for the fishing, pearl, rice, preserved and dried fish, birds' nests and rubber industries. There is a flourishing cultured pearl industry but for centuries Myeik natural pearls have been on par with rubies in value and attraction, much sought after by the Myanmar royalty and the aristocracy. These natural pearls were harvested by the Salon or Moken people, who are sometimes referred to as sea gypsies.

The Salon Sea Gypsies

salonAlso known as the Moken, they live among the hundreds of islands of the Myeik Archipelago. They are perhaps the earliest environmentalists who still remain so, for they only gather by hand what they need from the sea and do not even use nets to fish. They believe in keeping a balance between man and nature and in man with man: for if anyone among their dwindling group was to become ambitious it would destroy the equilibrium and peace of their community. They live on boats as they prefer a life of freedom rather the being rooted to the land. They carry only a few possessions on their boats, such as cooking utensisl, clothing and a few tools, such as spears for catching fish. During the stormy monsoon season they build temporary houses of bamboo, and plant enough vegetables for their own use. After the monsoon they resume living aboard boats and anyone is free to occupy their houses. The Salon have no greed for property.

Thery what they eat or sell from the sea, such as sea cucumbers and shellfish. They are hardy people and both men and women can dive without modern breathing apparatus to search for natural pearls. Pearls from the Myeik Archipelago have been famed for centuries for their amazing sizes and lustre. Most, if not all, were collected by Salon divers, though none wanted to keep them. Riches such as pearls could harm their harmonious culture and that is what they most value.

Dive Sites in Mergui Archipelago

Western Rocky Island

Visibility: 5 - 25 meter

Depth: 5 - 30+ meter

Snorkel Condition: not suitable

This limestone island features beautiful underwater terrain, including a tunnel-often full of large tawny nurse sharks-which traverses the island about 20-meters down.

Fan Forest Pinnacle

Visibility: 15-30+ meter

Depth: 5 - 30 meter

Snorkel Condition: not suitable

This site is just a few miles north of Western Rocky. The pinnacle rises from a depth well beyond the limits of recreational divers, to about 5-meters below the surface. It features huge orange sea fans, black coral, and large barrel sponges.

Three Islets (Shark Cave Island)

One of the most extraordinary dive sites, these three rocks that rise out of the sea from depths of 40-meters or more harbors some of the best marine life in the archipelago. Huge schools of fusilier and silversides surround you upon entering the water.

North Twin Island

Visibility: 15-25 meter

Depth: 30+ meter

Snorkel Condition: not suitable

Although there are several interesting dive sites surrounding this island, the most beautiful area lies to the west, several hundred meters from the island itself. It's almost a separate pinnacle rather than being part of the island.

North Twin Plateau

Visibility: 15-25 meter

Depth: 5 - 30 meter

Snorkel Condition: not suitable

Located just northwest of North Twin, this large plateau starts at around six-meters and carries on down to between 24 and 30-meters. It's quite a large dive site, and it's best to start in the deeper areas and find an interesting vein to explore as you move towards the surface.

Black Rock

Visibility: 15-25 meter

Depth: 5 - 30 meter

Snorkel Condition: good

Probably the most spectacular site with the most potential for big stuff in the archipelago, Black Rock is a rocky island approximately 100-meters long, located about 50-nautical miles north of North Twin Island. Here is the closest you'll come to having a true wall dive, with depths to over 60-meters and a dramatic drop off in most areas.

Onwards and upwards

Moving north, we find dive sites that are not dived that often due to the distances involved.

However, they are worth noting, as they will probably be dived more often in the future as the southern sites become more crowded.

Tower Rock

Located off Northeast Little Torres Island, this island rises dramatically out of the sea and plunges over 60-meters to the bottom.

Schools of mobula rays are seen here often.

West Canister

Located almost 80 nautical miles north of Black Rock, the island looks almost exactly like Ko Bon in Thailand, just flipped 180?. The best site is a pinnacle located almost in the middle of the small bay, and is almost connected to a ridge that runs from the westernmost point of the island. On dives we've done there, the top of the rock acts as a cleaning station for manta rays. It's a huge granite rock starting about 15-meters and continuing to over 40-meters.

Freak Island

A small island with enough tree cover to keep a pair of sea eagles happy, it is located about four nautical miles east of West Canister. The island can easily be swam around in one dive, but here it's important to slow down and look carefully, as the smaller marine life is what you should be enjoying.

End Bit

The Mergui Archipelago has something for everyone, and although the dive sites here can often learn towards the advanced, even intermediate divers will love the place as long as the dive sites are picked carefully.

As always, consult with the divemaster before diving to make sure you aren't getting more than you bargained for.

Tower Rock

in the northern Mergui region features breathtaking topography with large submerged boulders and walls of rock vaulting high into the water column. The walls are studded with corals and fans providing shelter for spiny lobsters, banded shrimps, oysters and clams. However the manta rays are the stars of this particular show flying effortlessly past the impressive seascape
